Student Film Wins Prize
By: Dale Olson – Courier Staff Writer
University of Cincinnati student David Lazarte has been selected the year’s “Outstanding Student Filmmaker” for his film Living in Technicolor, it was announced by Beverly Hills resident Charles Fries, president of the Caucus of Television Producers, Writers and Directors Foundation. The young filmmaker was presented with a $2,500 cash prize, as well as a two week camera package from Panavision valued at $15,000 by Ric Halpern, youth filmmaker program manager at Panavision. Lazarte is currently completing his BFA at the U of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music. His film, the story of a seemingly normal young man who finds himself mysteriously trapped in a mental institution, is one of nine films made by students from major universities throughout the country selected by the caucus in its Winter 2003/Spring 2004 submissions to receive completion film grants. Those grant recipients then participate in the competition for the award. All grant recipients receive mentoring aid from caucus producer/writer/director members. Producer/Director Lee Miller was provided to filmmaker Lazarte as a mentor on his film project. Fries revealed the foundation to date has presented 38 student grants totaling $225,000 since the grant program was established in 2001. Funds for the grants are primarily raised through the annual Caucus Awards dinner, at which the caucus confers honors on a producer, writer and director, as well as recognizing the achievements of caucus members and industry executives.
